The South African, or Boer War began 12 October, 1899, between the Dutch settlers of the Transvaal and Orange Free State and the British who had interceded ostensibly on behalf of the Uitlanders, foreigners, but in reality to gain control of these two mineral-rich areas. Australian troops saw action for the first time in this war. Contingents were sent to South Africa from Australia in 1898/99, 1899/1900, and April/May, 1900, the Australian Bushmen and the Imperial Bushmen, making 6,600 troops in all. The first battalions of the Australian Commonwealth Horse arrived in 1902 but the war was almost over, ending in the Peace Treaty signed at Vereeniging on 31 May, 1902
