  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Bank of NSW originally became interested in encouraging farmers to combat soil erosion when Alfred Davidson was General Manager in the 1930s. Mr Lowndes was brought into the Economic Department by Mr. Janes (who was then Associate Economist)

Mr Lowndes travelled extensively for the Bank around Australia, studying soil erosion and other rural subjects. Under the editorship of Mr Jones he produced the first Bank of NSW booklet on soil erosion called 'Conserve Your Soil' in about 1936. This booklet was revised a few times in the light of further evidence uncovered by Mr. Lowndes in visits to America, Africa and Europe. The booklet was used extensively in schools. Mr Janes took up the research work on soil erosion in about 1950. Some of Mr Janes' work was included in Professor Teakle's booklet, 'Your Asset-the Soil'
