  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Sydney Underwriters' Association, formed in 1876, was incorporated in 1885. In 1898, following the acquisition of salvage plant facilities and equipment, the Association became the Sydney Marine Underwriters' & Salvage Association Limited. In 1938 its staff amalgamated with that of the Fire and accident Underwriters' Association. The Association ceased operation in 1975 when the Insurance Council of Australia became responsible for State activities.

    Album and loose photographs relating to salvage work, 1908-1924
    Includes photographs of ships ‘SS Kallatina’, ‘SS Friendship’, ‘SS Seagull’, ‘SS Hastings’, ‘SS Bucra’, ‘SS Waratah’, ‘SS Douglas Mawson’, ‘SS Coolebar’, ‘SS Ramornie’, ‘SS Makambo’, ‘SS Rona’ and ketches ‘Curlew’, ‘Florant’ and ‘Zingarra’. Also includes loose photographs of the ‘SS Cooma’, ‘SS Seagull’ and ‘TSS Belbowrie’ and ‘TSS Maianbar’, an unidentified boat shed, and the sailing boat ‘Astoria’.
