  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

"This set of three sheets of working drawings for the extension and completion of the nave to Christ Church Cathedral, Grafton was drawn by me from about May to September 1934 whilst I was working for the firm of Power, Adam and Munnings, to which I had been articled in 1928. I had both completed my articles and obtained my Diploma in Architecture from the Sydney Technical College by then. Much of the drawing was done in Grafton where the dimensions of the existing building were obtained, and where the sketches for the whole building by Horbury Hunt were available." -- signed typescript statement by Nigel W. Ashton AM, A(Arch)STC, Dip T & CP (Syd), LFRAPI, LFRAIA, AAILA, Aesthetic and Environmental Planning Consultant, Greenwich, NSW, May 1983 (original on ML file).

"I took this set with me to England in 1936, and I think they were a help in getting me a job in H. M. Office of Works, were [sic] I worked on the Annex to Westminister [sic] Abbey for the Coronation of Edward VI and the installation of the stands for the pariticipants in the Abbey itself." -- extract from typescript letter from Nigel Ashton to the Director, National Trust of Australia, NSW, 5 June 1983; original on ML file.
