Scottish born immigrant artist Robert Campbell (1902-1972) began his career as a commercial artist in Brisbane, traveled to Europe to work and paint with Rupert Bunny in 1928, and was patronised by John Young of the Macquarie Galleries in Sydney. Campbell married Young's daughter Jean and by the 1950s was regarded as a leading watercolourist in Australia. As well as painting and drawing, Campbell was a successful arts administrator and curator.

The inventory accompanying this donation describes works 1-12 as "Set of 6, 1926-27, commissioned by J. Young". There is no apparent way to allocate these twelve works to two groups of six. They have been arranged together as nos. 1-12 in this sequence, with works of similar dimensions, that may have been executed on the same paper stock, grouped together within this range.
