    In 1915, local residents of Gilandra, NSW, William Hitchen, Captain of the Rifle Association, Joe Miller, a well known businessman and John Robert Lee a Lay preacher and share farmer organised a recruiting march from Gilandra to Sydney. The plan was to march to the next town or settlement during the day and to hold recruiting meetings in the evening when able bodied men would be encouraged to join up. They were known as the 'Gilgandra Coo-ees'.
