  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Quartermaster-sergeant W.P. Sparkes of Brisbane, Queensland was a locomotive engineer driver aged 32 when he enlisted 20 Aug.1914. He embarked on board HMAT A22 Rangatira, 25 Sept. 1914 and served in the 3rd and 11th Field Artillery Brigade and 4th Divisional Artillery in Egypt, Gallipolli and France. He was wounded at Gallipoli May 1915, hospitalised in Alexandria and returned to Gallipoli until evacuation in Dec. 1915. He received special mention in Divisional Orders for acts of conspicuous gallantry at Gallipoli. He was transferred to 41st Battalion, 4th Divisional Artillery in Feb. 1916 and departed for France June 1916 where he remained until his discharge on 17 Oct. 1917
