Private Alan McVicker Smyth, a clerk of Sydney, New South Wales enlisted aged 19 years, 20 June 1916 and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 7 October 1916. He served in France from 1916 with the 4th Australian Infantry battalion. He took part in the Allied offensive 8 Aug.-6 Oct. 1918 in the Abbeville area of France. After the Armistice he served in Belgium before returning to Australia on the Boorora, 6 July 1919 - Scope and ContentDescribes the Allied offensive and the collapse of the Hindenburg Line 8 Aug.-6 Oct. 1916, giving some details of battle formations, the number of prisoners taken and guns captured
