  Surgeon-Lieutenant Arthur Charles Robert Todd enlisted in 1914 at the age of 25, was appointed surgeon-on-probation on 17 August 1914 and was surgeon on HMAS Sydney until 30 Nov. 1917. He was one of two Royal Australian Navy surgeons on board H.M.A.S. Sydney during its engagement with the German raider SMS Emden on 9 November 1914, and for his work in tending the wounded was presented with a commemorative medallion made from one of the silver dollars salvaged from the Emden and the Western Australia Emden Medal.
