Information transferred from Pictures Card Catalogue as part of the eRecords Project, 2008-2009. - General note
Of other watercolours by Lacy offered at the Sotheby sale, some were purchased by the National Library of Australia, and others were offered later by Sawyer (catalogue 270), and Edwards, part 2 of Lot no. 196; a signed watercolour 'A Digger's wife...' in the National Library of Australia. - Signatures / Inscriptions
Unsigned. Titled in ink on back. - Attributions / conjectures
Lacy has been identified as the artist by comparison with another watercolour signed 'G. Lacy' acquired at the same time. - Date note
Dated 1851+ after watercolour compared to 'Cunnington's Handbook of English Costume in the Nineteenth Century', p. 431, which shows two women in 1843 (England) in riding habit. The time needed when Australian fashion was influenced by that of England, and the date of the first diggings at Tambaroora (1851), seems to indicate a date in the early 1850's. - Subject
