Isaac Stone Stocks was born ca. 1823 at Rye, Surrey, England. He arrived in Sydney, ca. 1847, with his wife Caroline, nee Easton. A member of the Primitive Methodist Church, Stocks is variously described in official documents as a writer, clerk, tutor and schoolmaster. He lived in Glebe and in the Parramatta area. In 1858 he transcribed in shorthand the Gospel of Matthew. Members of Stocks' family were well known identities in the Newcastle area, particularly in Methodist Church circles. His son, Jesse Marchant Stocks, married Louisa King, a member of a prominent family of shipbuilders in Newcastle. Eunice Warden is the widow of Isaac Stone Stocks' great-grandson, Victor Warden, from whom she inherited the transcription. - Collection historyFrom the Estate of Victor Warden, late husband of Eunice Warden
