This series consists of 11,462 portraits taken by Freeman Studios, ca. 1875-1915.

The negatives were filed in numerical order using the original Freeman negative numbers. The numbering of this series falls between 2132 and 62616 and is incomplete. The negatives were copied in 1977-1978 and the original nitrate negatives destroyed.

Access to this series of negatives is via a microfiche index available in the Mitchell Library Reading Room at PXA 337 (Freeman cabinet nitrates, microfiche 1-3) arranged alphabetically by name. The index provides the number for the viewing copy (proof sheets) and the original Freeman negative number. Viewing copies are available in the Mitchell Library Reading Room at NCY 7-21 Freeman cabinet nitrates.

It should he noted that the name given in the indexes is that of the person ordering the photograph and not necessarily the name of the sitter.

Larger viewing copies filmed in order of the original Freeman negative numbers are available on microfilm (listed below).
