John Skinner Prout, (1805-1876), artist, was born on 19 December 1805 at Plymouth, England. He arrived with his wife and seven children in Sydney on 14 December, 1840. He brought a complete lithographic printing press with him, and in early 1841 he started producing lithographed versions of his drawings of Sydney. In August 1842, the first part of 'Sydney Illustrated' was printed, followed by the second part, in November 1842. Due to a shortage of lithographic materials, the local press in mid 1843 recommended that local artists cease all attempts at producing lithographic views. Prout appears to have responded to this suggestion and suspended his work. 'Sydney Illustrated' was later recommenced and completed in 1844. • General note

The image is similar to 'The New Government House, Sydney', which appeared in 'Sydney illustrated'. A full description has been given by John Rae in 'Sydney illustrated', ML Q981.1/P. In his description he states, "To the left of the Government House, in the distance, we have a glimpse of the flag-staff and signal station on Fort Phillip Hill ... The castellated building rising from the water, immediately below Government House, is the Government bathing-house, erected by Governor Macquarie ... Farm Cove, which runs across the picture ... [and in] the foreground of the picture represents a part of the Government Domain where the Botanical Gardens are laid out." This area of the Government Domain is currently named Mrs. Macquarie's Chair.
