One of a series of drawings with historical notes recording early buildings in Sydney, submitted by Mann by arrangement with the Mitchell Library
"Brush Farm Estate was of 100 acres, and was acquired by Gregory Blaxland from William Cox in 1816. The site was selected because of its elevated position, commanding one of the finest views of the upper Parramatta River and surrounding country. It is said that the vineyard planted by Gregory Blaxland produced the first wine manufactured in Australia. Blaxland subsequently settled Brush Farm on his daughter -- the wife of Dr. T. Forster of the 50th regiment. Dr. Forster was father of the Hon. Wm. Forster, who was member for the Murray from 1856 to 1876 and subsequently was appointed Agent-General for New South Wales. He retired from this position in 1879 and returned to New South Wales. He died in 1882 at Brush Farm. Mr John Bennett, a racing identity, afterwards retired there. The house is at present a girls' mental hospital. [signed & dated in ink:] G.V.F. Mann, Sept 1932" -- Historical notes ... to accompany his sketches of early buildings / G.V.F. Mann.
