    `New South Wales; Or, Love in Botany Bay' being playbill for an `Entire New Grand Spectacle, principally founded on recent Events, with entire new Scenery, Machinery, Dresses and Decorations' performed at Jones's Royal Circus, St George's Fields. This spectacle was invented and produced under the direction of writer and actor, John Cartwright Cross.

    Part of: G. D. Whittington - `Theatrical Scraps consisting of Various Casts of Shakespears Plays, & other Stock Pieces. Also many other things relating to the Theatres of London', 1782-1799 (MLMSS 7631 page 128)
    John Cartwright Cross became manager of the Royal Circus in 1796, and a proprietor in 1798. `New South Wales; Or, Love in Botany Bay' was performed from August to October 1798. The earliest reference to it in the Times Digital Archive is dated Saturday, 25 August 1798.
    This play was possibly based on information taken from David Collins' recently published "An account of the English Colony of New South Wales", 1798
