    Nicholas Charles Phillips R.N. served in HMS Undaunted and HMS Alligator
  • Scope and Content
    Phillips' remark book or journal gives an account of voyages he made in (1) HMS Undaunted from England to the East Indies via Rio de Janeiro and Capetown in 1828 as well as to the Azores and the Western Islands; and (2) in HMS Alligator from Madras to Singapore, the Java Sea, the Swan River and King George's Sound (Western Australia), Van Diemen's Land, Sydney and the east coast of NSW, New Zealand and back to India and England, 1833-35. The remark book is liberally illustrated with pen & ink and watercolour coastal profiles, charts and topographical sketches including Macquarie Lighthouse, Ball's Pyramid and the La Perouse monument in Sydney.
    Fourteen photographs of the Boer War were added to the Remark Book at a later date by Phillip's grandson, Major C.M. Southey
