  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

James Roberts was a servant to Sir Joseph Banks on the Endeavour voyage. He came from Mareham le Fen in Lincolnshire and was 16 when he joined the voyage. He later lived in Banks' house in Soho Square. He died in 1826 aged 74.
  • Scope and Content
One volume in original vellum binding. The first four pages comprise a list of the officers and ship's company. The list shows the name and 'quality' (rank or occupation) of each person, with remarks on promotions, dates of death, etc, to Aug. 1771. The log records weather, position of the ship and events on board. A comparison of this log with others in the Public Record Office, London, appears to show that Roberts took his information from an anonymous log before 10 June 1768, and thereafter from the account of master's mate Richard Pickersgill. This account and that of Peter Briscoe, Banks' other Lincolnshire servant (see DLMS 96: MAV/FM4/2222, frames 1-69), both end on the same day. A typescript report on the journal by the bookseller is included in the volume.
