  • General note

The portrait medallion of Lady Dorothea Banks is believed to have been modelled ca. 1800 when Lady Banks was aged in her forties. It forms a pair with a portrait medallion of Joseph Banks, modelled around the same date, which depicts him in his late fifties.

This particular portrait medallion of Lady Dorothea Banks is a companion piece to the portrait medallion of Joseph Banks at P*34. Both produced ca. 1800, they are in lilac jasper dip and are housed in identical frames. The portrait of Joseph Banks at P*34 is from a design by John Flaxman Jnr, dated ca. 1775, which shows Banks as a young man. This pairing of differently dated designs was quite common.

The Mitchell Library holds three portrait medallions of Lady Banks (P*36, P*64, and PM 149). In the Library's 1908 Annual report, the Wedgwood medallion of Lady Banks (P*36) is included in the list of David Scott Mitchell's collection.
