From 1837 to 1840 Wills was a steward of the Foundling Hospital (now the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children), London. In Oct. 1841 he left England to live in Australia. and reached Sydney in Apr. 1842. He eventually took a position as Clerk with Mr Felix Wilson of Castlereagh Street. On 20 Mar. 1843 he was appointed to the post of secretary to the first Mayor of Sydney, C. H. Chambers

Journal (c. 400 p.), 30 Oct. 1841 to 13 Jan. 1844, describing his voyage to Australia on the barque Louisa and his first two years in Australia. The journal is addressed to Mr John Brownlow, Secretary of the Foundling Hospital at the time. It mainly records day to day activities but also provides details of events leading to the formation of the first Municipal Council of Sydney
