    Drawings - watercolour on ivory, in a contemporary turned rosewood frame - visible image, oval, 7 x 5.7 cm., in oval frame, 11.7 x 10.5 cm.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    In August 1806, Mary Putland and her husband Lieutenant John Putland, RN arrived in Sydney with her father, William Bligh when he took up the position of Governor of New South Wales. John Putland died on 4 January 1808, and on 8 May 1810 Mary married Lieutenant-Governor Maurice O'Connell. The couple remained in Sydney until 1814 when they accompanied the 73rd Regiment to India, eventually returning to Sydney in 1838. Following the death of Sir Maurice O'Connell in 1848, Lady O'Connell lived in Paris for some years and then returned to England.
