  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Krefft, in his role as Curator of the Australian Museum, clashed with some of the Museum's Trustees, particularly in relation to their rival collecting practices. In 1874, the Trustees dismissed Krefft on allegations of misconduct, but Krefft disputed this action asserting that the body were acting beyond their formal powers. Legal battles ensued for the next three years. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography. Vol.5, 1851-1890. Carlton, Vic.: Melbourne University Press, 1974

  • General note

Some of this material may have been compiled by Gerard Krefft, however, as some documents postdate Krefft's death, it is likely that the volume was compiled by another individual or organisation (possibly Henry Parkes, D.S. Mitchell, or the State Library of New South Wales).
This volume was formerly bound in a volume made by Tyrrell's bookshop, Castlereagh St., Sydney, with the spine title "Kreffts Museum MSS etc.". The volume was taken apart, deacidified and repaired by SLNSW Preservation Branch, Sept. 1983. The photograph was transferred to the Pictures Collection.
