Ada Augusta Holman (1869-1949), author and journalist, was born at Ballarat, Victoria, daughter of Ebenezer and Agnes Kidgell. By 1902 the family was living in Sydney and Ebenezer Kidgell, a journalist, passed away leaving his wife and children in difficult financial circumstances. Ada was submitting short stories and articles for publication under her own name and a variety of pseudonyms by 1896. She was a frequent contributor to the Sydney Mail, Sydney Morning Herald and the Freeman's Journal and she edited and wrote most of the copy for the Co-operator, a trade journal for rural producers. Ada Kidgell married William Arthur Holman (1871-1934) in 1902. She continued her journalism after her marriage but was more restricted in what she could publish, particularly after her husband became Premier of NSW. [ref:ADB 9]
