  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Edward Knox (1819-1901) was director of the Commercial Banking Co. of Sydney 1845-1901 and founded the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. in 1855. He had many other business and public interests, including his association with St. Andrew's Cathedral, the Benevolent Society, the (Royal) Prince Alfred Hospital (of which he was the founding director & chairman) and the Carrington Centennial Hospital for Convalescents (vice-president). He lived in a large Georgian-style house, 'Fiona' on New South Head Road, 1864-1901 (now part of Ascham School). Reference: The Australian Dictionary of Biography, Vol.5
