Author and journalist David Burke was born in Melbourne in 1927. A journalist and novelist but best known for his writing on Australian railways, he worked as a teenager on the steam locomotives of the Victorian Railways. He turned to radio script writing before switching his focus onto journalism, establishing a career in with the Melbourne Herald and Sun, then with the Sydney Morning Herald and other Fairfax publications. He has written 28 books, including a number on railways and others on Antarctica, which he has visited six times. - Scope and ContentHandwritten notes, typescript drafts, research material, illustrations, maps and photographs relating to his books 'Making the Railways' (1995) and 'Juggernaut: A Story of Sydney in the Wild Days of the Steam Trams' (1997).
