    George Thorne, 1810-1891, migrated to Australia in 1840. Thorne married Elizabeth Ann Bisdee whom he met on the voyage to Australia. They had 10 children. In 1850 Thorne purchased fourteen acres of land at Rose Bay from W.C. Wentworth. He built 'Claremont', where the family lived from 1851 to 1879. On 12 March 1868 George Thorne and members of his family attended a picnic at Clontarf, Sydney, at which Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh was shot and wounded by Irishman, Henry James O'Farrell. A second shot wounded George Thorne in the foot.

    1866; 'A Fragment by E.H.D. died on June 14, 1865', being small printed volume published 'For Private Distribution 1866'. The Preface describes the contents as "...few and unfinished lines were found among some manuscript papers of a beloved daughter lately fallen asleep in Jesus..". Pencil inscription on the flyleaf 'Rosalie Ann Thorne August 1866'. (Call No.: MLMSS 7003/1X)
