  It is possible that this item was bequeathed by D.S. Mitchell in 1907. A portrait of Lachlan Macquarie by Read, dated 1822, is cited in a list of material that was deposited with the National Art Gallery (Art Gallery of N.S.W.), prior to the Mitchell Library's opening in 1910. It is possible that the portrait in question is ML 36.
