Donald Horne (1921-2005), author, editor and academic, was born in Sydney. He began a career in journalism with the Sydney Daily Telegraph in 1945. In 1958 he became founding editor of the Observer, and served two terms as editor with the Bulletin, 1961-1962, 1967-1972. In 1973 he began teaching political science at the University of NSW, and became Associate Professor in 1981 and Emeritus Professor in 1987. He was chairman of the Australia Council, 1985-1990. The award-winning The Lucky Country (1964) was his first published book.
