- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Francis Xavier Roberts, 1921-1988, was a Catholic priest, ordained by Archbishop Gilroy in St Mary’s Cathedral , Sydney, in 1948. F. X. Roberts worked in various Sydney suburban parishes including Holy Spirit North Ryde in 1963 where he was chaplain to the North Ryde Catholic Youth Organisation. He also served at St. James’ Forest Lodge between 1967 and 1988. He died in October 1988. In 1990, Rodney Stinson established the F. X. Roberts Poetry Award ‘for secular and religious lyrics of farewell’, in his memory as ‘a fitting tribute to him and of practical assistance to people mourning the death of a loved one.’ In addition to three award winning entries from the public, three practicing poets were commissioned to submit a poem. Noel Rowe’s poem ‘Love’s Last Song’ was selected as most worthy and Christopher Willcock was commissioned to put the words to music in 1992.
