  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Born in London, Tenison-Woods was a Catholic priest, author, and scientist who had a strong interest in natural history. He sailed to Van Diemen's Land in 1855, but moved to Adelaide after a few months to sub-edit the Adelaide Times. Tenison-Woods first botanical work was undertaken for the Flora of Australiensis (1863-1878), supplying a list of plants for the Ninety Mile Desert in South Australia. In addition to being a member of several London Geological Societies, Tenison-Woods was president of and contributed papers to the Linnean Society of New South Wales. He travelled extensively throughout Australia and visited Java, Borneo, Siam, and Japan.
