• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  The index to selected 19th century Australian art catalogues, 1847-1900, began as a project in the Mitchell Library Pictures Section in 1989. It was instigated by the Curator of Pictures and continued by volunteers under the management of Berry Symons, then Beverley Smith. Initially, the index was compiled on cards, then entries were transferred to an electronic database. The index was finalised in 2019 and the data was exported in CSV format.
• Scope and Content
  A computer file comprising 18,459 entries compiled from 145 catalogues of Australian exhibitions held between 1847-1900. Each artwork is individually indexed with details of the work, artist, and exhibition. The index covers the fine arts, and some decorative arts. Included are paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, lithographs, etchings, engravings, medallions, architectural drawings and models, maps, charts, printing and bookbinding, as well as some pottery and jewellery.
