The Board of Directors of John Fairfax Ltd was established with the incorporation of the company on 9 April 1956. Initially the Board consisted of members of the Fairfax family, with Vincent Charles taking office on 29 April 1956 and James Oswald Fairfax joining on 9 May 1957.
The role of the Board was to make high level decisions for the company and to receive reports in relation to the company and the industry.

The series consists of a formal bound set of the minutes covering almost the entire period of John Fairfax Limited. In some of the minutes there are notes taken by the Directors but this is rare. The meetings received a report from the General Manager, discussed matters concerning the company such as industrial relations and made major decisions concerning acquisitions of interests and directions in which the company would proceed.
