  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Founded by Lanz Priestley and Donna Bartlett, the 24/7 Street Kitchen and Safe Space in Martin Place was originally conceived as a pop-up kitchen providing free meals. In late 2016 it expanded to provide beds for Sydney’s rough sleepers and homeless. The space was particularly aimed at homeless women, although all genders were welcomed.

Beds were set up underneath construction hoardings and the space continued to run as a kitchen. Other services were provided, including a clothing exchange and a library. After the hoardings were closed off, tents were set up in Martin Place to house the residents.

The State Government and the City of Sydney Council came into conflict over where responsibility for the space lay. In August 2017 NSW Parliament passed new legislation giving the Minister for Crown Lands power to move people from Crown land in the City of Sydney if there were concerns about safety. Fearing eviction, the residents dismantled the camp and withdrew from Martin Place.

John Janson-Moore is a Sydney photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist with an interest in social justice. His other photographic subjects have included the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy and residents of Millers Point. His work has been recognised by several awards, including the Moran Prize for Contemporary Photography in 2013 and an ATOM Award in 2012. He has been selected as a finalist in both the Head On Portrait Prize and the Percival Photographic Portrait Prize.
