  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Gerrit Fokkema is an experienced press and freelance photographer. Born in New Guinea in 1954, but raised in Canberra, he worked as a press and news photographer for the Canberra Times, Sydney Morning Herald and the Good Weekend Magazine 1975-1987. He then started his own photography company (Gerrit Fokkema Photography Pty Ltd) which he has operated for the past 30 years. He is most well-known for his sparse urban landscapes photographs and portraits. His work is held by the Australian National Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW and State Library of NSW, and has been exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography (1979), commercial galleries and various group shows.
He has had a longstanding interest in the Indigenous community in Wilcannia and in 1986 published Wilcannia: Portrait of an Australian Town (Sydney : Harper & Row, 1986).

  • Scope and Content
Comprises 55 digital photographs documenting inner Sydney streetscapes, buildings and urban landscapes, and reflects Sydney prior to the evolution of some areas from working class suburbs to sites of major residential developments and construction. It includes photographs of construction work in Haymarket and Darling Harbour as part of NSW 1988 Bicentennial projects, and buildings which no longer exist such as Anthony Hordern's Palace Emporium (demolished in 1985). In addition, Fokkema documented events such as the Royal Easter Show, including the last show at Sydney Showground and the first show at Sydney Olympic Park, and New Year's Eve celebrations at The Rocks, prior to the implementation of extensive alcohol restrictions.
