  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Allen Strom (ca. 1914-1997), educator, conservationist, naturalist and administrator was an iconic figure in the early years of environmental education in NSW. During the 1950s he was a pioneer education officer at the Australian Museum. He was a prominent member of the Caloola Club (founded in 1945 to foster a love of wildernesses and encourage nature conservation), foundation secretary of the National Parks Association of NSW and instrumental in the development of the national park and nature reserve system in NSW. From 1958 to 1967, he served as the Chief Guardian of Fauna on the Fauna Protection Panel prior to the establishment of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NP&WS). He was also a pivotal member of the Nature Conservation Council. From 1967 until his retirement he worked in the Department of Education as the Advisor in Conservation. In 1972 he was awarded the Australian Natural History Medallion for ‘special study and for increasing knowledge and appreciation of natural history in Australia’. His services to conservation education were also recognised in 1977 with an Order of Australia.

Allan Fox was a well-known environmental writer and photographer who was mentored by Allen Strom. Fox used Strom’s papers to write a biography of him.

  • Scope and Content
    BOX 1
Allan Strom papers, ca. 1940-ca. 1990, including copies of talks and articles related to Nature Conservation, Wildlife Conservation, Faunal and Nature Reserves, National Parks and Conservation Education. Correspondence as well as papers relating to the Caloola Club and the Fauna and Protection Panel.

    BOXES 2, 3X, 4X
50 black & white photographic prints by Allan Fox, ca. 1940-ca. 1960, of scenes within Australian national parks and reserves, mainly in Tasmania, and in rural towns, and of student groups. Many of the photographs are mounted on board, and captioned with 'Caloola Club', and location. It is likely many of these photographs were commissioned by Allan Strom for display within the Caloola Club, as they have pin holes in the mounts. Some of the photographs were also used by Allen Strom in early issues of Wild Life Magazine and for conservation education.
