    Nick Schlieper is a lighting designer who has worked for all of the major performing theatre and opera companies in Australia, and works regularly in Europe and USA. He is one of Australia’s most highly awarded designers having received six Melbourne Green Room Awards, four Sydney Critics Awards, the inaugural 2013 Australian Production Designers Guild Best Lighting Design Award, as well as Helpmann Awards in 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2014.

    During recent seasons he has worked with Australian companies including Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare Company and the Australian Ballet. His international work includes productions for the Hamburg State Opera, Royal Shakespeare Company, the Kennedy Centre in Washington and Schillertheater in Berlin.

    Nick Schlieper's interview highlights various aspects of his life and career: his childhood; first job at The Independent Theatre in North Sydney; seven years working in stage management, notably with then the Australian Opera; launch of his freelance career in 1985 as a lighting designer and the establishment of ongoing work in Germany’s theatre and opera; significant collaborations with directors like Simon Phillips, Benedict Andrews and Elke Neidhardt and set designers like Michael Scott-Mitchell; key examples of his work, notably with the Sydney Theatre Company; working team process and signature approach to lighting, its changing use of new technologies and its function when given due regard in the making of theatre; the making of Wagner’s Ring in Adelaide, musicals like Priscilla and Webber’s Love Never Dies; the problems in the Sydney Theatre Company’s ensemble model of the Actor’s Company under Robyn Nevin, and working with younger directors on significant productions in recent years.
