  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Naval surgeon Maurice Felton (1803-42) arrived in the New South Wales colony in 1839 and quickly gained acclaim for his artistic abilities, which surpassed his professional duties as a surgeon in the colony. In the few years he spent in Sydney, he produced a number of fine portraits of society figures, including artist Conrad Martens (ML 28). Felton’s portraits were mentioned on several occasions in the Sydney papers and always with enthusiasm.

    His artistic career was short lived, due to his untimely death at the age of 40 from unrecorded causes, less than four years after his arrival in Sydney. Felton died on 30 March 1842. While Felton is well known as a portraitist, he also produced landscapes and
    Tom Thumb’s Lagoon may have been one of the works sold at the art union lottery in early 1842; “The lottery, held at Felton’s Hunter Street home, was conducted with the assistance of Thomas Henry Braim, principal of the Sydney College. Tickets cost £1.”,
