  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The State Library of New South Wales commissioned community historian and photographer Brad Steadman to photograph the land and culture of contemporary Brewarrina, New South Wales, over a six-month period in 2016-2017. The project aimed to document an area, outside Sydney, with a large Indigenous population and significant Indigenous cultural heritage, as recorded by an Indigenous community photographer. Specific topics of interest were the Brewarrina fish traps and other significant sites, seasonal changes along the Barwon River, local Indigenous events, and leaders and other prominent figures in the Brewarrina Indigenous community.

Brad Steadman is a Brewarrina resident of Ngemba ancestry who is a local knowledge keeper and a teacher of Aboriginal language revival strategies.
