    1 drawing - watercolour on paper, laid down on board - 19.0 x 15.0 cm (drawing), 29.5 x 25.0 cm (board)
  • Scope and Content
    The drawing depicts an overcrowded small timber boat holding six convict passengers, and skipper leaning on the tiller. Two convicts are being pushed into the boat by a redcoat soldier whilst another redcoat looks on with rifle in slope position. Similar scenes can be made out in the far background, along with two corpses hanging from a gibbet.

    Two labels on verso. Upper: 19th century Parisian framer's label. Lower: printed catalogue entry from: Bois, Pène Du. (2013). pp. 465-6. 'The Library and Art Collection of Henry de Pène du Bois, of New York. London: Forgotten Books'. (Original work published 1887). Catalogue entry gives title of work as 'Going to the colonies'.
