    Manuscript translation by Louis de Freycinet from English to French of a text by Joseph de Mendoza y Rios published in Philosophical Transactions, London, 1801. The essay refers to the Reflecting Circle, an astronomical device used for measuring longitude. Mendoza y Rios was a Spanish astronomer, and correspondent of Freycinet's, who made improvements to the Reflecting Circle in 1816 by adding a vernier scale. Part of a group of manuscripts by Freycinet related to navigation and longitude held in a file stamped 'Archives de Laage' and headed Astonomie et Navigation, ca. 1800-ca. 1820.
