In 2015 the State Library of New South Wales commenced the Drawing the Library artist residency program. The intention of the program is to open the Library for artists to interpret and respond visually and creatively to its public and behind-the-scenes spaces.

Following the completion of an artist's residency, the Library has the opportunity to acquire the artist's works.
