Macarthur gave mules for expedition; describes mules, goats, dogs and horses; [Joseph Phelps] Robinson to supply bullocks for expedition; water boiling apparatus to determine elevation above sea level supplied by Mr Clarke; observed altitude near Ben Lomond and at Canning Downs; beauty of country after rains; visited [Matthew Henry] Marsh at Salisbury Plains, who has built a fine stone house; hopes that Turnbull [of A.A. Bunce unknown to botanical world in Europe, additions to the geography of Darling Downs, blunder in choice of companions; Lynd preparing to leave Sydney for New Zealand, where he has been ordered; will soon prepare for a new start, would like to wait for Kennedy, party is nearly made up
  
  pp. 27-30: 25 Feb 1848, at Canning Downs. Reflects on management of previous expeditions; choice of companions and route for third expedition, will depart from Canning Downs; Hentig volunteered to accompany LL on expedition; Daniel Classen (brother of LL's sister-in-law) sent out by LL's family, agrees to accompany LL on expedition; [Joseph Phelps] Robinson presented 20 bullocks for expedition; valuable information from report of Mr Kennedy on his return; pleasure of seeing printed copy of Journal with maps by Arrowsmith, and acknowledgement of expeditions in Europe; will start Monday 28 February and move in short stages down the Condamine; decision not to take Mr Bunce or any members of the old party
  
  Letters to Leichhardt after this date were addressed care of Sir William Macarthur and reached Camden after Leichhardt's disappearance in 1848.
