    pp. 1-3: 16 Jul 1844 Question of successor to Nasmyth Robertson at Sydney Botanic Gardens, appointment of Dr Leichhardt as Colonial Botanist; opposition of Alexander MacLeay to appointment of LL. Letter in reply to William's letter of 15 July (see A 2933, p.57)

    L. Leichhardt to William Macarthur:

    pp. 5-7: 18 Jun 1846, at Sydney (letter sent in the morning). Preparation of journal [Journal of Overland Expedition to Port Essington]; progress identifying grevilleas and hakeas; Mr Lynd received ferns from Mr Bidwell; recommendations for John Roper and James Calvert who wish to apply for situation in Customs in Newcastle

    pp. 8-11: 18 Jun 1846, at Sydney (letter written after sending the previous letter in the morning and receiving 2 bougainvillea specimens from W. Macarthur). Seeds of newly discovered plants forwarded to William Macarthur; testimonial to LL from citizens; LL to sit to C. Abraham for portrait bust; preparation of Journal of Overland Expedition to Port Essington; explanation of LL's relations with J. Gilbert sent to John Gould; applications to accompany expedition

    pp. 12-13: 18 Jul 1846, at Sydney. Seeds of newly discovered plants forwarded to William Macarthur; preparation of Journal of Overland Expedition to Port Essington; is to prepare lectures in the School of Arts; recommends a German worker for W. Macarthur; procurement of saddlery; hopes to settle with Captain King about mules; news of Sir Thomas Mitchell from Robert Dawson jnr returning from Castlereagh

    pp. 15-17: 1 Aug 1846, at Sydney. Recommends a German transportee to W. Macarthur's favour; working on lectures for School of Arts; awaiting answer from Captain King re mules; seeds of newly discovered plants forwarded to William Macarthur; Ravac (from Glogan, Silesia) called on LL, visit to be returned; intends to visit H. H. Macarthur; Lynd has seeds for W. Macarthur

    pp. 20-23: 9 Nov 1846, at Darling Downs. Arrived safely at Hodgson's Station; H. H. Macarthur gave mules for expedition; describes mules, goats, dogs and horses; [Joseph Phelps] Robinson to supply bullocks for expedition; water boiling apparatus to determine elevation above sea level supplied by Mr Clarke; observed altitude near Ben Lomond and at Canning Downs; beauty of country after rains; visited [Matthew Henry] Marsh at Salisbury Plains, who has built a fine stone house; hopes that Turnbull [of A.A. Co.] obtains permission from Captain King to join expedition; publication of letter to Mr Bunce

    pp. 24-26: 10 Oct 1847, at Sydney. Reporting arrival in Sydney on ship Tamar from Moreton Bay, return from journey to Peake Range, botanical collecting including Bottle-tree seeds collected by D. Bunce unknown to botanical world in Europe, additions to the geography of Darling Downs, blunder in choice of companions; Lynd preparing to leave Sydney for New Zealand, where he has been ordered; will soon prepare for a new start, would like to wait for Kennedy, party is nearly made up

    pp. 27-30: 25 Feb 1848, at Canning Downs. Reflects on management of previous expeditions; choice of companions and route for third expedition, will depart from Canning Downs; Hentig volunteered to accompany LL on expedition; Daniel Classen (brother of LL's sister-in-law) sent out by LL's family, agrees to accompany LL on expedition; [Joseph Phelps] Robinson presented 20 bullocks for expedition; valuable information from report of Mr Kennedy on his return; pleasure of seeing printed copy of Journal with maps by Arrowsmith, and acknowledgement of expeditions in Europe; will start Monday 28 February and move in short stages down the Condamine; decision not to take Mr Bunce or any members of the old party

    Letters to Leichhardt after this date were addressed care of Sir William Macarthur and reached Camden after Leichhardt's disappearance in 1848.

    pp. 44-45: 20 Apr 1850 (in French) Reporting arrival at Papeete as Government Botanist, offers to exchange seeds and botanical specimens from Tahiti for others from New Holland, is under instructions to collect for Paris Museum of Natual History; Garcourt (or Garcaut), Captain of French frigate, Thisbe, conveyed Governor Bonard to Otaheiti
