• Scope and Content
  Includes journal of Mrs Elizabeth Macarthur on voyage to New South Wales, 13 Nov 1789-14 Apr 1790 (15 pages, finishing at the Cape, the last sheet torn in half); correspondence, 1791-1840. A number of letters include a postscript by the younger Elizabeth Macarthur; some brief notes on Mrs Macarthur's parentage and relatives (Hatherley/Veale families).
  
  Correspondence includes a letter from Mrs Macarthur to Bridget Kingdon, dated Sydney, 7 Mar 1791; two letters from B. [Bridget?] Kingdon at Bridgerule, 23 Aug 1796 and 15 Sept 1799; Mrs Macarthur's original letters to her children, 1823-1840; one letter to her husband, undated, but probably written in December 1830; letter from G. Blaxcell to Elizabeth Macarthur, 29 May 1809, and a copy of her reply in her own handwriting, 30 May 1809.
  
  Typed copies of some of the less legible (cross-hatched) letters written by Mrs Macarthur, 1824-1839, are inserted at the end of the volume.

  A note by Monica Flower (Mitchell Library officer) following the notes on Mrs Macarthur's parentage and relatives stated: "The preceding page contains notes by C. H. Kingdon (niece or nephew of Miss Eliza Kingdon, god-daughter and correspondent of Mrs Macarthur); it contains some errors M. F. 4.8.1947".
  
  A printed copy of Elizabeth Macarthur's journal of her voyage to New South Wales, 13 Nov 1789-14 Apr 1790 is included in S. Macarthur Onslow (ed.), Some early records of the Macarthurs of Camden (Sydney : Angus & Robertson, 1914).
  
  The journal and some letters are published in The journal & letters of Elizabeth Macarthur 1789-1798 / introduced and transcribed by Joy N. Hughes (Glebe, N.S.W. : Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales, 1984), which includes "all the known writings of Elizabeth Macarthur for the period 1789-1798" (Introduction, p. 5).
