The Self Indexing File (commonly known as the Small Pictures File) was established in 1945. It contained: 1. single mounted collection items (chiefly photographs, including cuttings and plates extracted from books) 2. photographic copies of collection items (Pictures Copying Scheme). Arranged alphabetically in 4 categories: Ships - Ship images and press cuttings (3 cabinets) SPF (Small Picture File) - Place & Subject headings (27 cabinets) P1 - Single portraits (8 cabinets) SPG - Portrait Groups (1 cabinet) These items were available in the Mitchell Library Reading Room. The files were withdrawn from the reading room and rearranged ready for further cataloguing and targeted digitisation as part of the eRecords project in 2013.
