A committee was set up by the NSW State Premier’s Department “The Snowy Mountains Bushfire Recovery Taskforce” to help residents in the region recover from the devastating fires of 2003. The Taskforce commissioned Louise Darmody from Sound Memories to produce a documentary involving 26 people from the Snowy Mountains to talk about their experiences.

Louise and the Taskforce chose a cross section of the community to interview about the nine week blaze which burnt two thirds of Kosciuszko National Park and large tracts of private land. The interviewees included farmers, school children, volunteers and employees from the NSW Rural Fire Service and National Park Snowy Hydro.

Louise Darmody travelled extensively around the Snowy Mountain’s region to interview all these people a year after the fires.

For preservation and access, the original oral history CD masters were converted to WAV files, in 2013. Original material has been retained.

This collection comprises 9 oral history interviews, which document the experiences of people who were impacted by the 2003 Snowy Mountain bushfires. Interviewees include firefighters, community members, and National Parks and Wildlife representatives.
