- Scope and ContentPersonal log mainly in Bligh's hand. The log begins with introductory remarks about the failure of the Bounty voyage and the reasons for repeating the voyage; the procuring of two vessels, HMS Providence and the tender Assistant; the commission to command the Providence; the recommendation of Lieutenant Nathaniel Portlock as Captain of the Assistant; descriptions of the two vessels and the ships' complement including marines and two gardeners appointed by Sir Joseph Banks; fitting out the ships at Sheerness and then the voyage to Spithead. The log entries begin on 17 July 1791 at Spithead and cover the expedition from sailing on 3 August 1791 to the end of the plant collection in Matavai Bay, Otaheite (Tahiti) on 18 July 1792. Records descriptions of ports of call - Tenerife (28 August-2 September 1791), Capetown (7 November-23 December 1791) and Adventure Bay (9-24 February 1792); aspects of the anthropology of native peoples especially Otaheiteans (Tahitians); subsequent histories of the Bounty mutineers including those taken on board HMS Pandora; taking command of the Matilda's crew, together with a list of those Bligh took with him and the names of those deserting.
