    1 wartime badge - sterling silver - 2.5 x 3.3 cm
  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

During World War One these badges were a recognisable indication that the wearer had attempted to voluntarily enlist for military service for Australian and the British Empire. They were issued to men who had been officially deemed medically unfit for duty. During the course of the War, the Rejected Volunteers' Association was established in various Australian states. This badge was produced for the rejected volunteers of New South Wales. Later, the R.V.A. amalgamated into the Australian Volunteers Association.
  • Scope and Content
The badge displays the letters 'RVA' in the centre. Above these letters is the statement, 'FOR EMPIRE' and below is written 'N.S.W.' Two small scrolls are attached to the top and bottom of the badge. A small circle is joined to either side. On the back of the badge there is engraved the number 1953, presumably the member number of the individual who joined the NSW Association.
