  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Maurice John (Jack) Pickrell, was born in Sussex, England in 1894 and arrived in Australia around 1910 (as a 16 year old). He travelled around the country. He worked on an orange orchard at Mangrove Mountain and on a dairy farm. In 1914 he was employed as a driver for a doctor in Glen Innes. He drove a horse and buggy for the doctor and transported him on all his house calls.

While in Brisbane visiting an aunt, he walked into a recruitment office on 18 September 1914 and walked out an enlisted soldier in the A.I.F. at the age of 20. It would be over 4 years before he returned to Glen Innes. His enlistment in Brisbane was within 2 days of his father in England and older brother in Africa enlisting. His father (a journalist), brother Leslie (a Lieutenant in 3rd Kings African Rifles) and M.J.P. (with supplies) all survived through the war.

His skills as a driver were used; he served in Egypt, was briefly at Gallipoli (delivering stores) and then served in Northern France.
His good knowledge and acquaintance with horses led to his placement in the 4th Divisional Transport. John had a familiarity with horses and told a story of horses (and men) bathing in the ocean prior to Gallipoli. He also recalled holding the horses trying to keep them calm in Northern France during strikes.
