Norman Lee Pearce was born in September 1891 at Hillston, in New South Wales. His father Thomas Pearce was a solicitor in Parkes, his mother was Mary Louise Pearce. Norman worked as a surveyor’s assistant before enlisting. His two brothers Thomas and Joseph also fought in WW1 while his sister, also called Mary Louise, remained home in NSW. Norman joined the Australian Imperial Force in Liverpool on 6th April 1915 in the 5th Field Ambulance Unit. He left Australia on 12th May 1915 and served in the above Unit on the Gallipoli Peninsula until evacuated and then transferred to the 13th Field Artillery Brigade on return to Egypt. In November 1916 he fought at the Somme and died there on 20th November 1916. He was buried at 'Cough Drop' Dressing Station near Bazentin le Grand in France.

The diary includes accounts of daily routines, movements of his brigade throughout Egypt and France with references to soldiers killed in action. Some pages in January are filled with lists of names rather than entries and general notes such as names addresses and lists of individuals are included in the back of the diary.
