    Harley Matthews, tram conductor of Fairfield, Sydney enlisted in the A.I.F., 4th Battalion B Company at the age of 25 and served as a private in the First World War. He received a special mention for conspicuous gallantry at Gallipoli where he was wounded, 3 Aug. 1915. He returned to Australia on HMAT Borda, 25 Nov. 1917. He published a number of books of poetry and appears in several anthologies.

  • Scope and Content
    The poem 'Quest of Love' was published in 1 October 1915 issue of The Lone Hand. 'Summer Song' first appeared in Matthews' 'Under open Sky' in 1916 [91/756]
