  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The National Council of Women of NSW was founded at a public meeting held at the Sydney Town Hall on the 26 June 1896. It was formed by the affiliation of various women's organisations in order to promote equality and justice for women and children. The Council has helped to shape public opinion and influence legislation and has had a major role in many important reforms concerning the status of women and social welfare. Standing Committees carry out research and advise the Council on many issues including education, health, the environment, mass media, international relations, migration, laws and the status of women; the Council makes submissions to governments and other authorities and is in turn consulted by them. Membership of the NCW of NSW consists of delegates appointed by the affiliated organisations and individual associate members, from which an Executive Committee is elected. Each Australian state has its own National Council of Women affiliated with the National Council of Women of Australia which is affiliated with the International Council of Women.
